'Skybridge' at VSL, Waitakere Gardens
The Skybridge is a functional and well designed walkway, combining client vision with engineering excellence.
The initial idea for this impressive foot bridge was developed by Vision Senior Living in partnership with architects Pacific Environments. Arrow International were involved in the detailed design stage and were required to bring this creative project to a reality.
As Project Director, Neil Winstanely was required to choose and work with contractors that could deliver this project on time and to the clients specifications.
Being part of a fully operational facility and having to build the bridge over a public roadway meant that there were several buildability issues and extensive pre-planning was required. Built in 3 sections, as much as possible was completed off site to minimise work at height, working in a ‘live’ environment and to mitigate the effects of the weather.
Much greater control of quality can be achieved in the factory. The steel frame was fully pre-drilled for the roof and glazing to be simply bolted on when the frame was installed. The flooring system was installed at ground level and the structure was fully painted before being lifted by crane into position.
The project was completed for the client on time.
